Abandoned vehicles

We are responsible for removing abandoned vehicles from the public highway.

An abandoned vehicle is generally a vehicle that has come to the end of its life and/or has no owner and has therefore been disowned.

Dumped or abandoned vehicles are unsightly, potentially dangerous, encourage anti-social behaviour and overall negatively affect the quality of our environment. Hounslow Highways is responsible for investigating and arranging for the removal of abandoned vehicles from the borough’s public highways.

The following categories are generally associated with abandoned vehicles:

  • Stationary for a significant amount of time (at least two months)
  • Significantly damaged, run down or unroadworthy
  • Burned out
  • Lacking one or more of its registration plates
  • Build-up of dirt around vehicle

Please note if the first two conditions are not met, the vehicle will not be classed as abandoned and therefore, we will be unable to remove it.

How do I Report an Abandoned Vehicle?

Please use our Contact page so we can investigate.

It would be of help to our investigation if you could provide information about the vehicle, such as the make, model, colour, registration number, exact location and a short note on the condition of the vehicle.

What happens next?

Once your report is received, it will be passed to an investigating officer. The officer will visit the location to inspect the vehicle and assess whether it is abandoned and if so, arrange for its removal. Once removed the vehicle will be taken to the pound where it will held for a short time and then destroyed and recycled.

Untaxed Vehicles

These are vehicles which are not abandoned but have no valid or out of date tax disc on display. The DVLA takes enforcement action for vehicles on the highway that are not showing a valid tax disc. You can report an untaxed vehicle to the DVLA here.
