No ifs, no butts!

8 Oct

Hounslow Highways is working with the council and Hounslow Stop Smoking as part of the national Stoptober campaign to reduce littering.

No ifs, no butts!

Promotional stickers have been affixed to council litter bins  at 14 littering hotspots within the borough supporting the Stoptober campaign. Hotspots were selected from areas where the largest accumulations of disposed butts are regularly found.

In order to increase visibility for smokers, the stickers have been positioned adjacent to the stub plates on litter bins.

Stickers have also been put on mechanical sweepers that Hounslow Highways deploys to help raise awareness of the campaign.

Councillor Ed Mayne, Hounslow Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Leisure, said: “Every time a smoker stubs out their cigarette they will be reminded that they can get help and support to quit.  And with the range of support available during Stoptober there’s really no excuse not to try. If you’ll excuse the pun, it‘s a clear case of ‘no ifs, no butts!’ – it’s good for your health and good for the environment.”

Hounslow Highways Service Director, Rob Gillespie, said: “Cigarette butts are the most commonly littered item on Hounslow’s streets. With over 600 fines issued by our Environment Team this year for littering, the work with Stoptober complements our existing anti-littering efforts to continue improving the street scene.”
