Hounslow Highways lends a ‘metal’ helping hand

20 Mar

Children from Smallberry Green Primary School did not have to get their hands dirty when they carried out a litter pick around their school grounds on Wednesday 20 March, as Hounslow Highways leant them 30 handheld metal litter pickers to help them do the job.

Litter picking around the school in Isleworth was just one of the activities carried out by the children as part of their School Environment Day.

Staff from Hounslow Highways’ Community Environment team were also on hand to assist and share some interesting facts about litter and graffiti - including how Hounslow Highways picks up 13.5 tonnes of rubbish throughout the borough each day, equivalent to about 15 lorry loads!

Rebecca Mastrogiannis, Hounslow Highways Environment and Sustainability Manager, said: “We are delighted to have been able to help the school by lending them litter pickers on their School Environment Day. Any assistance from the local community in maintaining a cleaner borough is a huge help and we need the community to get on board and join us keeping the borough cleaner.”

The Smallberry Green Primary School Business Manager Sharon Crosland said the students were very satisfied with their litter picking efforts.

“The amount of rubbish we have accumulated is amazing. We hope that all the children will think twice about dropping litter in future. The litter pickers, gloves and support we have received from the Hounslow Highways team is great and we feel the day has been a combined community success.”
