Love your streets or pay the penalty

A poster campaign urging residents to love the streets of Hounslow and warning anyone dropping litter that they could be fined, began last week.

The posters are part of a Council and Hounslow Highways campaign Love Your Streets - Hate Litter, highlighting the joint, ongoing zero tolerance approach to grime crime.

Councillor Colin Ellar, deputy leader of Hounslow Council and cabinet member for environment, said: “Anyone who loves Hounslow and hates litter will not have to worry about being fined. But the selfish minority who fail to heed our warning will be liable to pay an on the spot fine if they litter our streets.”

Cllr Ellar’s warning came after the release of Keep Britain Tidy figures last week which showed Hounslow was getting cleaner.

They revealed levels of litter and detritus have fallen by two and 8.6 percentage points respectively since the last survey in September 2013.

Cllr Ellar said: “These independently verified figures show that Hounslow is getting cleaner and I think our get-tough approach has helped.

“But we still have a fair way to go until Hounslow becomes one of the cleanest boroughs inLondon– which is our ultimate aim.”

Three more people were fined for dropping litter this week – bringing a total of 29who have been issued with an on the spot £80 fine over the past four months.

Hounslow Highways Service Director Rob Gillespiesaid: “It’s fantastic to see that the cleanliness levels have improved in Hounslow and we will continue to work towards a cleaner borough.

“Our officers remain vigilant and will continue to issue fixed penalty notices to those who dispose of waste illegally.”
